DOLLARS TO THE CLASSROOM
ACT
The Dollars to the Classroom Act (H.R.
3248), introduced by Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA), will consolidate 31
federal education programs into a single, flexible grant program for
states and communities.
This bill signals an important,
systemic shift in how federal education dollars can be delivered to
our nation’s schools. It will send more dollars directly to the
classroom while giving states and local educators more funding
options. Rather than tying teachers’ hands with heavily regulated
and tightly restricted grant programs, the act will allow educators
greater flexibility to receive money for any of the authorized uses
of the existing 31 programs. School districts could choose to put
greater amounts of federal money into priorities such as school
safety, technology, teacher improvement and school reform.
The Dollars to the Classroom bill
would supply an average of $425 extra per
classroom. No state would lose money under this plan; all would
receive increased funding, ranging from an additional $1.6 million
to $89 million.
