THE PRESIDENT
MEXICAN TRUCKS - In 1993 my wife's car was crushed in Texas by an 18 wheel dump truck driven by a man who spoke no English. He was an illegal alien hired for less money than any trained American trucker would take. There was no hearing for the tickets he received; he simply went back to Mexico which refuses to extradite any of their nationals to the United States for any crime including murder. The Bush Administration has now opened all of the nation's roads to Mexican trucks in an experiment that will allow 100 Mexican companies to run to any destination in the USA for one year. If all goes well the President plans to allow all Mexican trucking companies the same access. If a Mexican driver causes an accident or even kills someone, he can simply go back to Mexico with no fear of any punishment in this country. When will the one sided deals with Mexico stop? This agreement should have contained liability provisions that would have allowed for criminal charges and extradition. Click here for Washington Times story.
THE PRESIDENT AND LATIN AMERICA - President George W. Bush has discovered that our alliances closest to home are crumbling from lack of attention. The President began a tour of Latin American this week and is currently in Brazil. While the Administration has been distracted by a war not going well in Iraq, the governments of two South American countries, Venezuela and Bolivia, have moved to ally themselves with terrorist governments such as Iran. China has successfully moved into Latin America and the Caribbean, threatening to divert our main source of oil. China gives more aid to Caribbean Islands such as Dominica than does the United States. Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez is personally leading demonstrations against Bush during his visit.
US FUNDS TERROR SCHOOL - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funds schools in the Palestinian Territories which are controlled by the terror group HAMAS. Meanwhile Christian Schools in the "West Bank," including Bethlehem are impoverished and don't receive a dime from the United States. Last year $2.3 million went to Al-Quds University which last week celebrated the invention of the suicide bomb belt. Meanwhile the Religious Freedom Coalition assists Hope School in the town of Beit Jala just outside Bethlehem. Like the other Christian Schools in the Palestinian Territories it receives no aid at all from the USA. Click here for complete story on aid funds to terror. THE HOUSE
HOUSE TIME NOT OUR TIME - Last year when gasoline prices went over $3.00 a gallon the House passed and the Senate approved a bill to expand Day Light Savings Time, ostensively to save on the use of energy. The result: For the next two weeks virtually every international flight will misconnect in Europe. Although the USA goes to Daylight Savings Time this weekend, the rest of the world will move their clocks forward the last Sunday in March. Until then we are out of sync with the rest of the world. The airlines cannot change their flight times to make international connections work because of the slots they are allotted at busy European airports. Meanwhile our kids, who have been going to school during daylight will suddenly find themselves going to school while it is still dark in many parts of our nation. Every law passed by Congress, no matter how well intended, has unintended consequences. Click here to tell your congressman what he has done.
TAXPAYERS TO PAY FOR ABORTIONS - Every year the same battle is fought in Congress over the budget, as liberal Democrats seek to force American taxpayers to fund overseas abortions and conservative Republicans defend against this since it is a violation of conscience for taxpayers who are pro life. In this Congress, the newly empowered Democrats lost no time introducing the Global Democracy Promotion Act, H. R. 619, as it easily sailed out of Committee. This legislation, which already has 50 sponsors in the House, would remove the current prohibitions on abortions at clinics receiving American foreign aid. Predictably, Democrats and their Planned Parenthood supporters have some twisted talking points ready for the media. They label the current policy the "global gag rule," because any time liberals have trouble forcing other Americans to pay for killing babies or producing pornographic art, they somehow portray this as "censorship."
THE SENATE
CHINESE OR VENEZUELAN JUDGES TO ALTER US LAWS? - How about any judge in the entire world having the right to dictate changes to any law in any state in the United States, plus having the power to force any private organization to alter how it does business? That is what the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) proposes. Article 5 of the treaty would require us "to modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women." This treaty never had a chance to be ratified under a Republican Senate, but now the Democrat leaders are bringing it forward and women in the United States may not understand that it will actually erase the special status they have in this nation. Click here for information in the CEDAW from Phyllis Schlafly of Eagle Forum.
RELIGION AND SOCIETY
IS AMERICAN TV ANTI-SEMITIC? - I don't watch much TV and have to confess that the only movies I have seen in years are those I am forced to watch on airline flights. So I was shocked on February 27th when I flipped the TV on to a Law and Order: Criminal Intent episode that was vehemently anti-Israel and anti-Semitic. It portrayed American Jews as being unpatriotic and Israelis as brutal uncivilized brutes. Apparently I was not the only one who noticed because the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America did a lengthy analysis of the program. Oddly, some conservatives still cling to the idea that the media is controlled by "leftist Jews." Far from it, the media in the United States is controlled by secularists who despise anything Judeo-Christian. Click here for details.
INTERNATIONAL
ARIEL FUND RAISING EVENT SUCCESSFUL - On Wednesday night the Religious Freedom Coalition participated in a fund raising dinner in Aventura, Florida for a civic center in Ariel, Samaria. As part of our participation we had a full page ad in the event program. Both my wife Nancy and I attended the dinner along with RFC Board Member Robert Armstrong. Dr. Ron Wexler of the Ten Commandments Commission attended the event as our guest. During our time at the event we had ample time to spend with our good friend former Ambassador to the United States Daniel Ayalon, who was the keynote speaker. The Ambassador warned that Iran was not only an enemy of Israel but of all the civilized world and that Iran must be stopped from obtaining nuclear weapons at any cost. The Israeli city of Ariel is in the center of Samaria which the Western media refers to as the West Bank. The Religious Freedom Coalition supports projects in Ariel financially, including an evangelistic outreach to Palestinians who live in surrounding areas.
