Week Ending August 17, 2007 - Washington, DC
NEW: The August 9, 2007 issue of the Chairman's Report is now available online. New and expanded material about persecuted Iraqi Christians and much more! Click here to read!
THE PRESIDENT
KARL ROVE RESIGNS - Karl Rove is perhaps one of the most brilliant political minds of all time. He developed the strategy that reelected George W. Bush despite an increasingly unpopular war. I have met Karl Rove on numerous occasions. He is really not the horned devil depicted by liberals! Click here for resignation story. Click here or on image for larger photo of Karl Rove and myself at the White House.
MIKE HUCKABEE AND THE WALL STREET JOURNAL - Suddenly the Wall Street Journal has begun to "puff" presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. The day after the Iowa straw vote a page five headline read "Huckabee, Iowa Poll's Real Winner." Many social conservative leaders found this odd since the Wall Street Journal spends much of its editorial space bashing us. But, Governor Huckabee backs the establishment of the Fair Tax and the elimination of all income and corporate taxes. So single minded is the Wall Street Journal on the tax issue that they will back a true pro-life social conservative like Mike even though they are opposed to most of his social views.
A WHITE HOUSE WEDDING - Jenna Bush, one of the twin daughters of President and Laura Bush, will wed the son of an old friend of mine. The groom is Henry Hager, son of former Virginia Lt. Governor John Hager. A victim of polio, John Hager graduated college, got married and became a political heavyweight after losing the use of his legs. His son, Henry, was a White House intern and served as part of the President's re-election team in 2006.
THE HOUSE
RECESS - The House is in summer recess until September 4, 2007
GOP LEADERSHIP DEPARTURES - The most powerful Republican female in the House has announced that she will not seek reelection in 2008. Rep. Deborah Price (R-OH) was the fourth ranking member of the House Republican leadership. She will leave a void in the GOP leadership structure. Also announcing this week that he will not run again was Chip Pickering (R-MS) who is just 44. Chip is a social conservative that we regret to see leaving. Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL) also announced that he will not seek reelection. In my opinion he is no great loss. Hastert allowed corruption and petty politics to so infect the House GOP under his leadership that control was lost to the Democrats in 2006. Three House Republicans; John Doolittle R- CA), Rick Renzi (R-AZ) and Don Young of R-AK) are undergoing FBI investigations and could be forced to leave.
THE SENATE
RECESS- The Senate is in summer recess until September 4, 2007
RELIGION AND CULTURE
BISHOP SAYS TO CALL GOD "ALLAH"- If we call God "Allah," they (Muslims) will stop killing our people. Is that the message of Tiny Muskens, the bishop of Breda, on the Dutch TV program "Network" ? He said he believes God doesn't mind what He is called and that all churches in the Netherlands would call God "Allah" in 100 years. It will probably be sooner than that. According to demographic experts, the Netherlands will be majority Muslim in less than 30 years and the forced conversions will begin. Click here for story.
PRESIDENT PUTIN AND THE CROSS - Numerous newspapers in the USA ran a photograph of Russian President Vladimir Putin fishing in Siberia with no shirt on. Most of the captions were derogatory referring to his "ice cold stare." I saw something else. The unposed photo of the fishing trip clearly shows that President Putin wears a cross on a chain around his neck. Click here to see AP photograph.
INTERNATIONAL
EGYPT ARREST OUTRAGE- Numerous Christian leaders in the United States and organizations promoting religious freedom have reacted with outrage to the arrests of Christian leaders in Egypt. Click here to read the letter sent to the Egyptian Minister of the Interior by the Religious Freedom Coalition and other groups.
NOT A MUSLIM: THEN DIE - More than 350 Yazidis were slaughtered by five Muslim suicide bombers. The Yazidis are a primarily Kurdish religious sect with ancient roots, one that worships an angel figure. They are a rather peaceful and close knit minority group, and were targeted simply because they are not Muslim. Click here for update.
MONTHLY JIHAD REPORT - In July, 2007 there were 322 violent Jihad attacks by Muslims in 17 countries with 2,211 killed and 2,674 critically wounded. A full list can be found at www.thereli gionofpeace.com.
