THE PRESIDENT
STATE OF THE UNION AND HEALTH CARE Most of the themes in the State of the Union Address by the President this week were familiar, including those associated with the "war on terror." The only truly new theme involved what the President referred to as "affordable health care." Under the President's plan a family would pay no income tax on up to the first $15,000 of income so that the money saved could be used to buy health insurance if they had none from their employer. The President has prescribed yet one more bandage for a hopelessly broken system. Congress and the Democrats offer nothing better. Our health care system is so broken that a full 16% of the Gross Domestic Product is spent on health, yet more than 50,000,000 people are uninsured. By contrast Germany at 10% of GDP is the next highest spender on medical care. In Germany all citizens have universal medical coverage. Japan which has one of the finest systems in the world spends only 8% of GDP on health care. Both the President and the Congress, Republicans and Democrats, need to think out of the box and come up with a real cure before the bills of a disabled medical system cripple the nation financially.
THE HOUSE
CORETTA KING The Democrat controlled House passed a resolution for Martin Luther King Day specifically praising his wife, Coretta King, for her advocacy of "gay rights." This was the first time that I know of that Congress has congratulated anyone in a resolution for working for "gay rights." Considering that Dr. Martin Luther King was a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, it was wholly inappropriate.
DO NOTHING San Francisco liberal Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi continues to portray the Republican 109th Congress as a "do nothing" body. Yet, virtually no new legislation has passed since she picked up the gavel. Most of what has passed was repackaged legislation previously approved when the Republicans were in control. New ethics legislation has been watered down to protect two Democrat congressmen who are under investigation by the FBI.
THE SENATE
UNBORN VICTIMS OF PAIN Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) reintroduced the Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act this week. The bill would require those who perform abortions on unborn children 20 weeks or more fter fertilization to inform the mother seeking an abortion of the medical evidence that the unborn child feels pain. "It is a scientific, medical fact that unborn children feel pain," said Brownback. "We know that unborn children can experience pain based upon anatomical, functional, physiological and behavioral indicators that are correlated with pain in children and adults. Mothers seeking an abortion have the right to know that their unborn children can feel pain." The Senator has announced that he is seeking the Presidency and has a strong constituency among social conservatives.
SLAVERY
THE MOVIE William Wilberforce had a conversion experience in which he accepted Jesus Christ as his lord and Savior. This conversion led him to a successful campaign to eliminate slavery in England and thus led the way to end it in the civilized world. Slavery exists today only in the Islamic world and in the brothels of Europe. A new movie about William Wilberforce is being released.
